My four year old came across the Movie Alice in Wonderland and it became an immediate favorite of hers. She watched it continuously and willingly put aside the princess dresses to live in her Alice dress. So naturally when her birthday came around it was fitting for my little Alice to have an outdoor Mad Hatter Tea Party!
Unfortunately for me Alice was not a popular character for themed parties (pre Tim Burtons remake), so I had to be very creative with everything from invitations to décor.
I started with a home made invitation and took phrases form the movie –
“Don’t be late for a very important date”
come celebrate Zoie’s “very merry” 4th birthday in “wonderland” on …
Sandwiches, cake, cookies and tea for you and for me
Follow the “white rabbit” to…
RSVP to the queen by.. or “off with your head”
Mad Hatter says “wear you favorite crazy hat”
Décor –
3 picnic tables were put together to make one long “tea table” bold pastels were chosen for place settings square two toned paper plates, bright napkins and different color plastic utensils with a plastic clear tea cup for each. 3 long neck colored vases (Joann’s fabrics) with gems or jewels placed at bottom with flowers wild but neat were used for center pieces. Jewels were also scattered along the table for added festivity and for take home party favors.
Paper lanterns (Allin party supply) also in bold pastels were hung right above the table for s perfect setting.
I took two decks of cards (red and black backing) and stung them alternately facing in and out on red string to make my own garland and hung around the perimeter of the tea area. I found large over size cards (Allin party supply) and used those on the posts.
The birthday girl had her own chair at the head of the table painted pink with jewels and her name on it.
Games - we played 3
First
Using the same concept as musical chairs, we played “musical roses” I took small round cake plates and covered them with rose printed wrapping paper had the guest form a circle and place their plate in front of them.
They walked around the circle until the music stopped and the one who was standing with no roses was out.
Remove a plate and so forth.. (the plate also a take home party favor if they choose)
“Musical roses” was played to the tune of “painting the roses red” (on the sound track)
Second
Same concept as pin the tail.. we played “tape the smile” on the Cheshire Cat. I had an awesome artist draw free hand and paint the Cheshire Cat on foam board. We use madi gras beads (purple, pink, black and silver keeping with the cat color theme) for the smile. Each guest got a strand of beads, blind folded and lead to the cat posted on a tree with someone attaching two pieces of tape to the beads just before each tried to tape the perfect smile, the smile was initialed from end to end so the next guest could play the one who was closest won. (beads also a take home party favor)
Third
Croquet
Instead of playing a traditional game we used two foam boards and cards men were draw on, and cutouts were made at the bottom and placed on the opposite end, guest took turns seeing who could get the ball through the cut out or the farthest.
Food and drink
Finger or “tea” sandwiches were served along with pasta salad, fruit salad and chips and dip (all child friendly) along with heart shaped cookies that read “eat me” for dessert. Lemonade replaced tea.
And a wonderful mad hatters tea party was enjoyed by all.
Note: In planning for this party we found many great sites that had awesome ideas and instructions on Mad Hatter Tea Parties, here are there sites.
